It began the way so many good things do: in a grandmother’s living room, surrounded by spools of yarn on the coffee table, fabric draped across every chair, and I Love Lucy flickering on the television. Grandma Bonnie and Grandma Beverly made the whole world feel smaller and warmer. They taught me that the most meaningful things in life are the memories made with the people you love most, and that if you are lucky, you get to make something beautiful in the process.
Quilting. Crocheting. Sewing. Not as hobbies, but as a love language. A way of wrapping someone in warmth and saying, without words: I thought of you, I made this for you, and I want you to feel how much you matter. Those hours together shaped everything I would eventually become.
Decades later, I still work at my grandmother’s sewing machine. A Singer Sewing Machine, the last all-metal model, built during World War II, was passed down through our family and still runs beautifully today. It hums the same way it always did. Every time I sit down at it, something comes rushing back: the sound of Beverly humming softly in the next room, Bonnie’s steady hands guiding a hem, the feeling of an afternoon with nowhere to be and nothing to prove. That machine is not just part of my business. It is part of my story.
Blankets by Brian was founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2014 and has grown into one of the most original handmade blanket companies in the country. A gay-owned, independently operated small business, it has been featured on ABC 4’s beloved lifestyle program Good Things Utah. It has earned a devoted following through loyal customers, heartfelt recommendations, and the undeniable feel of authentic Minky fabric.
Every product is assembled by hand, right here in Utah, and not outsourced or manufactured overseas in a facility that has never met the customer. Made here, thoughtfully and intentionally, by hands that still believe details matter.
